How Valeda Light Therapy Works

What Is Valeda Light Therapy?

Valeda Light Therapy is a non-invasive, FDA-authorized treatment for dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It uses carefully calibrated wavelengths of low-level light to stimulate the cells in your retina, supporting their ability to function and maintain health.

For many patients with early to intermediate dry AMD, the standard advice has been to monitor your eyes, take AREDS2 vitamins, and wait. Valeda offers something different: a treatment designed to be proactive, giving your retinal cells the support they need before further changes occur.

Also Known as Photobiomodulation (PBM)

You may hear Valeda referred to by its clinical name: photobiomodulation, or PBM. Photobiomodulation simply means using light energy to support the normal function of living cells. The concept has been studied across many areas of medicine. Valeda is the first device designed to deliver photobiomodulation specifically for dry AMD.

How It Works

Dry AMD affects the retina, the thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye responsible for your central vision. In dry AMD, retinal cells gradually lose their ability to produce energy efficiently, which can lead to slow vision changes over time.

Valeda delivers three specific wavelengths of light to the retina:

  • 590 nm (amber) - helps reduce factors linked to cellular stress and damage
  • 660 nm (red) - supports how cells use oxygen
  • 850 nm (near-infrared) - helps drive energy production at the cellular level

Together, these wavelengths work to support the retina's natural ability to function and repair itself.

FDA-Authorized and Available Now at RCSD

Valeda received FDA authorization in November 2024. Retina Consultants San Diego was the first retina practice in San Diego to offer it, making this treatment available to our patients before it was available anywhere else in the region.

Valeda is not a cure for dry AMD, and individual results vary. It is most effective as part of a complete approach to managing your eye health alongside regular monitoring, AREDS2 supplementation if recommended, and UV protection.
